The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world’s first jet fighter to enter combat service. Although its appearance did not affect the outcome of World War II, as it only began combat flights in 1944, this aircraft forever changed the face of military aviation. It became a symbol of modernity and speed, and was used as an interceptor fighter, bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. German pilots called it “Sturmvogel” (Stormbird), and the Allies knew it as “Turbo”.
This machine was ahead of its time! With its appearance and capabilities, it aspired to be a “Wunderwaffe” (wonder weapon) and had a huge impact on the future development of military technology.
Although the Me 262 was in service for a short time, these machines gained recognition and their crews shot down 900 enemy aircraft with relatively low losses of their own. One of the most famous piloting feats of the Me 262 was the escape of pilot Hans Guido Mutke to Switzerland in the last days of the war. After the war, Czechoslovakia continued the production of this type of aircraft, assembling them from available parts left behind by the Germans. The first Avia S-92.1 was built in 1945, and in August of the following year it was test-flown by pilot Antonin Krauss. The second model was test-flown in September, and the third on October 10th. In 1947, the fourth aircraft was completed, and simultaneously the two-seater CS-92.7 model was finished.
However, the Soviet Union did not approve of this independent production and ultimately ordered the termination of the aircraft manufacturing program.
